Nigerian Institute of advanced Legal Studies, Nigeria - Akinola Aguda School of Post Graduate Studies School has been in existence since 1995. Products of the Institute are well recognized all over the world with a good number of them serving the legislative drafting needs of the country in different respects. Others are also pursuing programmes in the best universities in Europe and the United States of America.


Nigerian Institute of advanced Legal Studies, Nigeria - Akinola Aguda School Of Post Graduate Studies inform the general members of the public that sale of forms for admission into the AKINOLA AGUDA SCHOOL OF POST GRADUATE studies of the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies has since commenced. The 2012 academic session commences in September.

Admission And Graduation Requirements

1. Candidate for admission into the PGD programme shall possess the LL.B degree of a recognized University, the Certificate of Call to Practice Law (BL) and NYSC Discharge or Exemption certificate. In exceptional circumstances, any other person whose educational qualifications and cognate experience is deemed sufficient by the Institute may be admitted. Candidates must be of good character;

2. Candidates for admission to the LL.M degree programme shall possess the LL.B degree with the minimum score of a Second Class Lower of a recognized University, the Certificate of Call to Practice law (BL), NYSC Discharge or Exemption Certificate, and be of good character. Candidates with a Third Class or Pass shall first be required to do a Post-Graduate Diploma in Legislative Drafting before such a candidate can proceed for the LL.M;

3. Candidate for admission to the M.Phil/Ph.D degree programmes shall in addition to paragraph two above possess the following:
    (i)   LL.M in Legislative Drafting of the Institute;
    (ii)  LL.M in Legislative Drafting from any other recognized University from the Commonwealth Law System or the United State of
           America;
    (iii) LL.M from any other recognized University

4. A candidate for the M.Phil/Ph.D Degree may additionally be required to undergo a selection exercise. Where a candidate does not have an LL.M in Legislative Drafting, the candidate shall be required to undertake such other pre-requisite or concurrent studies as may be prescribed by the Institute;

5. All prospective M.Phil./Ph.D students shall first be admitted into the M.Phil programme;

6. Prospective M.Phil/Ph.D Students should submit with their application for admission, not only the title of a broad general area in which they wish to undertake research, but also a detailed outline (three or four pages) of a specific topic within that field indicating the ways in which they consider that extended scholarly research and analysis in the field will make a significant and original contribution to knowledge. They should also give some indication of the materials they expect to use, where they expect to find them and the method of analysis they propose to use.

Aims and Objectives of the PG School

The aims and objectives of the Postgraduate programmes in legislative drafting are:

a. To provide opportunities for Postgraduate studies in fulfilment of one of the objectives for the establishment of the Institute;

b. To assist the nation in producing person with expertise in legislative drafting at the level of PGDLD, MLD, M.Phil and Ph.D;

c. To help in meeting the deficit in the demand and supply for future trainers of legislative drafting;

d. To consolidate the over 17 years achievement of the Institute in the field of human capital development in legislative drafting at both Postgraduate Diploma and LL.M programmes;

e. To encourage the nation to save foreign exchange as far as overseas training of Draftsmen up to Ph.D level is concerned;

f. To indirectly assist African emerging democracies in producing high quality legislation through the production of competent and highly qualified legislative draftsmen and gradually turn Nigeria into the hub for the training and development of high level manpower in legislative drafting in Africa;

g. To produce highly skilled M.Phil and Ph.D, holders in legislative drafting for Nigerian Universities desirous for developing courses in this filed in their Law Faculties.


Statutory Authority and Mandate to Run The Postgradaute Programme

Under Section 4 of the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies Act, CAPN 112 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004, the functions of the Institute amongst many others include:

(a) To Provide Information, Supervision, Guidance And Advice To Post Graduate Students And Other Researchers Who Are Working For Post-graduate Degree Of Any University In The Field Of Law And Related Subjects;

(b) To Conduct Courses Of Instruction In Legislative Drafting Leading To The Award Of Post-graduate Diploma Or A Post-graduate Degree;
