The Nigerian Navy yesterday disclaimed a Facebook account opened in the name of the Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Marshal Usman Jibrin.
A statement by the spokesman of the Navy, Commodore Kabiru Aliyu, warned the public against falling prey to the scammers, asking people who visit the page to call a number provided for recruitment into the navy.
According to Aliyu: "The Nigerian Navy wishes to bring to the attention of the general public the existence of a fake Facebook account purportedly belonging to the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral UO Jibrin.
"In this fake Facebook page, unsuspecting members of the public are being fraudulently directed to call a telephone number for the purpose of enlisting into the Nigerian Navy," he added.
"For the avoidance of doubt, the Chief of the Naval Staff doesn't own any Facebook account.
He said any person who subscribes to this fake Facebook account for the purpose of enlisting into the Nigerian Navy does so at his or her own risk.
Aliyu noted that the Navy would not be liable for any damages suffered by members of the public who respond to the fake facebook account.
